On Friday, May 2, the Wayne State University College of Nursing celebrated both its Commencement Ceremony in the morning, as well as its Convocation in the afternoon.

​The 2025 Urban Health Research Conference is a professional gathering of nurses, healthcare providers, and researchers focused on addressing social issues in urban health through research and collaboration. The event provides a space for professionals to share their work, connect across disciplines, and explore evidence-based approaches to improving community health outcomes.​

​Dillon Glenn is a PhD student whose research focuses on smoking cessation within couples, examining how relationships influence health behaviors and long-term outcomes. With two published research articles, Dillon’s work reflects a strong commitment to evidence-based, collaborative science. He credits the mentorship and support he has received through nursing research for shaping his growth as a scholar and helping him become the best scientist he can be.

​Claire Zukowski is a CD2 nursing student whose academic path was reshaped by personal health experience. After earning a bachelor’s degree in law, Claire faced a cardiac health issue that gave her firsthand insight into the patient experience and the impact of compassionate care. This moment prompted her to shift career paths and pursue a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Her lived experience continues to inform her approach to nursing, grounding her education in empathy, advocacy, and patient-centered care.

Robert Ploutz-Snyder, PhD, PStat is Professor and Associate Dean for Research. Trained in experimental psychology with a strong foundation in biostatistics, his work focuses on clinical trial design, longitudinal data analysis, and innovative methods for studying small or hard-to-reach populations. Across medical, nursing, and government research settings, he has contributed to more than 140 peer-reviewed publications and over 60 funded studies. His research emphasizes clinically meaningful outcomes and collaborative, team-based science.

Dr. Caparso is a nurse, researcher, and educator whose work is grounded in one core

belief:  cancer does not affect individuals alone, it affects entire families.

Her program of research focuses on developing mobile communication tools that help patients with cancer, their caregivers, children, and health care providers stay connected, supported, and informed. Through these interventions, Dr. Caparso aims to strengthen family functioning and support resilience, helping families meet their basic human needs during one of the most challenging periods of their lives.

​Dr. Deka is a clinician, researcher, and former athlete whose work is grounded in one core belief: movement is medicine, and it’s the key to a stronger, healthier heart.

His program of research focuses on using technology and sensor-based tools to help older adults with heart failure stay active and independent. Through these digital innovations, Dr. Deka aims to make physical activity easier to track and harder to ignore, helping patients reduce hospital stays and reclaim their quality of life during the golden years of their lives.
